Salvador Bahia

The first colonial capital of Brazil.

Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia and former capital of colonial Brazil, is the biggest city in the North-East region. Occupied by European settlers in 1510, today the city is a vibrant metropolis, with a culture and personality not to be found anywhere else in Brazil or the rest of the world. Salvador is a city full of magic, mystery and enchantments. Tradition and modernity co-existing, the oppression which still has its effects on the Afro-Brazilian community and, at the same time, a place where, unlike any other in the country, the same people affirm their values and beliefs, and show their beauty to the world. To understand Salvador, you must arrive with an open and happy heart, as the city and its population are some of the happiest you will find. Each year, thousands of tourists come to enjoy the North-Eastern weather, the relaxed Bahian pace and the rich culture.

Pelourinho

The historic Centre of Salvador.

The history of the Pelourinho neighbourhood is intimately linked to the history of the city itself, founded in 1549 by Tome da Souza, first Governor General of Brazil, who chose the Pelourinho for its strategic location - on high ground, next to the port and commercial area, and with a natural barrier made by the sharp elevation of the terrain, facilitating the defense of the city.
From the 1980's (with the recognition of the colonial houses' historic importance by UNESCO) and 1990's (with the revitalisation of the region) onwards, the Pelourinho has transformed itself into what it is today: a centre of cultural effervescence.

In the past few decades, the Pelourinho has attracted artists from all genres: cinema, music, literature and painted art, making it an important cultural centre of Salvador.
